Martin Elkort
Martin Elkort (1929-2016) "Coney Island Days"
During his days as a member of New York's Photo League (c.1947-1951), Martin Elkort and his trusty Rolleiflex set out to capture the "spontaneity and innocence of subjects moving through their environments ... thus excavating their hidden truth". Until its closure in 1951, Ellkort was an active member of the Photo League, where he met Paul Strand, attended lectures by Aaron Siskind and Imogen Cunningham and participated in group shows. In 1951, Elkort sold three photographs to the New York Museum of Modern Art via Edward Steichen.
Martin Elkort's work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, NY, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the J. Paul Getty Museum.
